Diving in Southern Visayas
S/Y Philippine Siren Liveaboard Diving in Southern Visayas
Worldwide Dive and Sail’s 40m Phinisi sailing vessel, the Philippine Siren, set sail from Cebu Yacht Club for a ten day voyage of the Southern Visayas. This was to be no ordinary trip, on board we had the pleasure of distinguished marine biologist and conservationist, Gregor Hodgson, who would be conducting the educational program; Reef Check. We welcomed aboard a truly cosmopolitan guest list all the way from the USA, UK, Mexico, Portugal, Netherlands, Australia, France & Switzerland. This was a great mix, soon afterour muster station drill and the welcome on board briefing, the divers started to relax and settle in for the overnight trip to Cabilao.
The weather would prove to be a challenge for the most of the cruise, however Captain Russel would see that we achieved the complete intinerary: Cabilao, Balicasag, Apo, Dauin, Moalboal, Pescador, Sumilon and Oslob. During our 10-night liveaboard safari, our guests enjoyed many special highlights including dolphins at Cabilao and whale sharks galore in Oslob, whilst Pescador was the most splendid I had seen it in years. The list of species identified was comprehensive and the rough weather brought blue water schooling fish in from everywhere. The visibility was exceptional too and we enjoyed warm water throughout with an average of 28?C. The lowest point of the trip was the coffee machine giving up…. but all was not lost, with a simple phone call a new one appeared and the smiles returned to the faces of our guests.
Joining the Reef Check team for many evaluations and watching Greg‘s informative presentations, we all learned a new appreciation for our environment and also developed the ability to see with a new perspective. Indicator fish, hard and soft corals as well as invertebrates were identified and marked down and useful data was collected. It was amazing how much more we saw and understood. Once Greg left in Moalboal the newly qualified team resumed Reef Check with vigor, plenty of photography and fun diving went on too. On one of the later nights of the cruise a photo show was provided with guests showing their top ten pictures from the trip As always the time spent between diving was a big part of the holiday experience. Delicious meals were provided by our talented chefs Jimmy and Boy. The final evening party was of course full of fun and vitality.
Thanks to all for joining and taking part in Reef Check, we look forward to seeing you again next time! Paul & the Philippine Siren team
