Maldives Megan Gets a Taste of Palau

BatfishStarting off in a new destination is always exciting and having spent the last year in the Maldives, aboard the Maldives Siren, I was eagerly anticipating the move to Palau to join the Palau Siren team. Heralded as one of the top pelagic destinations worldwide, just how would the diving in Palau compare with the Maldives or even Indonesia for that matter??

Palau Parrotfish getting it on!

BlueCr5After a month back home in Phuket, I returned to Palau for another week of sharks and mantas. Our guests this time came from all over the world and we welcomed some return customers on board. In true Siren Fleet style we spent the first afternoon setting up equipment, going over our new home and participating in the safety drills. Chef Andri showed off his excellence with a great dinner and Maarten, our “birthday child” got a black forest cake to celebrate. Welcome aboard the Palau Siren!!!

Christmas in Palau…

Chris---Jellyfish-LakeReef sharks, mantas, Napoleon wrasse, big fish schools and jellyfish were what we were all hoping for and our trip aboard the Palau Siren delivered! Thomas & I had eagerly awaited our trip to Palau for the past 18 months so it was with utter excitement that we set off from Phuket on 14th December. Meeting up with some old friends along the way we spent a couple of days hanging out in Koror before the rest of our group were due to arrive and sneaking in a couple of extra dives in the morning with Sam’s Tours, just to get us started!

Wrecks, Mantas and Mandarins

aerial70islandsAfter placing the maiden voyage successfully behind us, the crew of the Palau Siren sailed on in to their second 10-day charter in to the Palau Islands on November 10, 2012 and moved forward like a well-oiled machine. On this charter, the lucky guests on board hailed from Germany and Austria, under the leadership of veteran diver Tony Mayer of Tauch Safari’s. Tony has brought several groups diving with the Siren Fleet and it was a pleasure to have him and his great sense of humor on the Palau Siren.

Maiden Voyage in Palau

Maiden Voyage in Palau

palua-sirenThe luxury liveaboard dive vessel, the Palau Siren arrived in Palau on September 22nd of 2012 after a long journey from Bira, Indonesia, where her keel was laid more than 18 months prior. As the final day approached all the crew from Sam’s and the Palau Siren were anxious to get things under way and show the people of Palau the latest luxury liveaboard in all her glory. To say we weren’t nervous would be misleading. Much effort has gone in to this project for several years now and the moment of truth was about to take place. The guests arrived from locales all over the world such as Thailand, Switzerland, Germany, Argentina and the UK. They were given the grand tour of their new home for the next 10 days and to my relief, many expressed great satisfaction at the many creature comforts the Palau Siren had to offer, including hard wood finished staterooms, marble inlaid bathrooms, individual air conditioning units and a brand new “in-float” entertainment system complete with a large selection of movies, music and books to choose from. The fact that the Siren had a fully stocked bar didn’t disappoint anyone either.
